๐What Is an Elf on the Shelf Arrival Letter?
An Elf on the Shelf arrival letter is a short note from Santa Claus that shows up alongside your scout elf on the morning of his arrival. It explains who the elf is, why he is there, and what the rules are for the holiday season.
For families doing this for the very first time, the letter does the heavy lifting. It introduces the whole holiday tradition without you having to explain it. For families who have done it for years, it is a fresh way to mark the elf’s return and remind everyone about best behavior before the Christmas countdown really starts.
You will see this letter called a few different things. An Elf on the Shelf welcome letter and an Elf on the Shelf introduction letter are just other names for the same thing, usually used when it is a new elf or your first year with the tradition. The one that is actually different is the Elf on the Shelf return letter, which announces that last year’s elf is back from the North Pole rather than introducing a brand new one.
Our free printables cover both situations, so you can grab whichever one fits your family this year.

๐ซWhen Does the Elf Arrive?
Most families and classrooms start the Elf on the Shelf tradition on December 1st. That is the first day of the Christmas countdown and it lines up neatly with an advent calendar, so the elf’s arrival becomes part of the same morning routine.
You do not have to wait, though. Plenty of families bring their elf in the day after Thanksgiving so he is there for the whole stretch of the holiday season, and some pick a date that just works better for their week. There is no wrong answer. The perfect time is whenever you will actually remember to move him.
Whichever day you choose, set the letter out the night before so it is the first thing the kids find the next morning. It is so much fun watching them find it.

You will receive six printable letters in one PDF file: two cute letters, each in three designs.
Letter 1: From the Desk of Santa Claus
This is your arrival letter, and it is the one to use if you have a new elf or if it is your very first time doing the tradition.
It comes straight from the North Pole and tells the kids that with Christmas Eve drawing near, Santa Claus has sent a special friend to keep an eye on them and spread Christmas cheer. It explains that their new elf reports back to Santa every single night, promises there will be only good behavior in sight, and lays out the one rule that matters: no touching, or the magical powers depart. It closes with “see you soon” and Santa’s signature, so there is nothing for you to fill in.
The header is a North Pole postmark, and the bottom is a silhouette of Santa’s sleigh flying over a snowy village.

Letter 2: Hello Dear Friend, I’m Baaack!
This is your return letter, written by the elf instead of Santa. Use this one if your elf is coming back after last year and your kids already know the drill.
It is a rhyming letter in a playful handwritten font, with a cute elf hanging upside down from a string of Christmas lights at the top. The elf tells the kids he is here to stay until the night before Christmas Day, that Santa sent him over, that he will be watching daily and reporting every single night, and that there is just one rule: please do not touch me, or my magical powers will go. It signs off with “love your elf,” followed by a blank space for you to write in the elf’s name.
Three Designs for Each Letter
Both letters come in three different sets of borders so you can match whatever your decor looks like:
- Candy cane stripe, a classic red and cream diagonal
- Festive ribbon stripe, red, green, and white
- Red snowflake, a softer patterned red
Print whichever one you like, or print a different design each year so the letters do not feel repetitive to kids who have seen them before.

๐ญWhich Letter Should You Use?
Quick guide if you are not sure:
- First year with an elf, or a brand new elf this season: use Letter 1 from Santa. It introduces who the elf is and why he is there.
- Returning elf from last year: use Letter 2 from the elf. It skips the introduction and jumps straight to the fun.
- More than one child, or a classroom: either works. Neither letter names a specific child, so one copy covers everybody.
- Want to use both: some families do Letter 1 on arrival morning and save Letter 2 for a fun elf switch later in December.
๐The One Elf Rule (And Why Both Letters Mention It)
Both of our letters include the same rule, because it is the one that saves you the most trouble: no touching the elf, or the magical powers go away.
It sounds like a small detail, but it is the backbone of the whole Elf on the Shelf tradition. It keeps the elf from getting dragged around the house, it explains why he cannot be hugged, and it gives you a built in reason for why he is in a new spot every morning instead of wherever your toddler left him. Having it written down in Santa’s own words carries a lot more weight than you saying it.

โญ๏ธNaming Your Elf
If you have a new elf, naming him is the first job, and it is genuinely one of the best parts. Some families let the kids pick on arrival morning. Others have the elf arrive already named, with the name written into the blank at the bottom of the return letter.
A few favorites to get you started for your special elf: Snowflake, Buddy, Jingle, Tinsel, Cocoa, Pepper, Sparkle, Nutmeg, Winnie, Bernard.

โ๏ธEditable Elf Letter Template
The free letters are ready to print as they are. Letter 1 is already signed by Santa, so there is nothing to fill in at all. Letter 2 has a blank space after “love your elf” where you write in the elf’s name by hand, or you can type into it using a free program like Adobe Reader, which takes about a minute.
Neither free letter has a line for your child’s name, which is deliberate. It means one printed copy works for every kid in the house or the whole classroom.
If you want to personalize further and make it your own letter, the editable elf version is available in our Etsy shop as a Canva file. That Elf on the Shelf letter template lets you change every line, add your child’s name or all your kids’ names and children’s names for a classroom set, and swap the colors to match your theme.

๐Fun Elf on the Shelf Arrival Ideas
The letter is the centerpiece, but where you stage it is what makes the photo. Here are some easy elf arrival ideas that take about two minutes each and add extra fun to the big morning:
- In the Christmas tree. Tuck the elf into the branches with the letter propped against the trunk.
- Arriving by parachute. A coffee filter, some string, and the letter taped to his hands.
- With a candy cane. Elf holding a candy cane, letter underneath.
- Inside the advent calendar. Letter rolled up in the December 1st pocket.
- At the breakfast table. Elf sitting in a cereal bowl with the letter as a placemat.
- In a gift box. A small gift alongside the letter so arrival morning feels like a real occasion.
- Taped to the bathroom mirror. First thing they see, no setup required.
Whatever you pick, remember your mischievous little elf needs a new spot every single night after this. Grab our easy Elf on the Shelf ideas so you are not standing in the kitchen at 11pm trying to think of fun things to do with him.

๐Elf Letters for the Rest of the Season
The arrival letter is the first of several. Here is what comes next.
When behavior slips. Our Elf on the Shelf warning letter is a gentle nudge from Santa when a fun elf has been reporting some not so great choices. It is a reminder about good behavior rather than a threat.
When they have earned it. Santa’s nice list certificate is great to award on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, and it spreads a little holiday cheer right when everyone needs it.
When the elf leaves. The Elf on the Shelf goodbye letter is the departure letter your elf leaves on Christmas Eve before he heads back to the North Pole until next year. Most kids get a little sad reading it, so pairing it with the nice list certificate is the perfect way to lighten the mood and end on a Merry Christmas note.
All season long. Our printable elf notes cover everything in between, and they go great with our printable props and elf games.
Around Christmas time we also love spreading Christmas spirit with our 31 Days of Random Acts of Kindness. You can turn every one of those into a fun elf idea. Another fun tradition worth adding is our countdown to Christmas paper chain and our ultimate Christmas bucket list.
