✈️Elf Departure
On Christmas Eve when it’s time for the elf to leave, use our free printable elf goodbye letters to say farewell. You can also award the kids with our free printable nice list certificate on Christmas morning.
⏰Last-minute Elf Ideas (5 minutes or less)
We have all been there. It is 10:30 at night, you are finally sitting down, and then it hits you: the elf hasn’t moved. Here are my go-to ideas that take 5 minutes or less.
- Hanging out. Tie a ribbon around the elf’s waist and dangle him from the ceiling fan or a cabinet knob.
- Toilet paper zip line. Run a piece of string or yarn across the room and tape the elf to it like he’s zipping by.
- Hiding in the stockings. Just his head peeking out of the top. Done.
- Fishing in the sink. Tie a string to a pencil and drop a few goldfish crackers in a bowl of water.
- Reading a bedtime story. Prop the elf on a stack of Christmas books with one open in his lap.
- Marshmallow bath. Fill a mug with mini marshmallows and sit the elf right in.
- Toy car race. Line up a few Hot Wheels with the elf in the lead.
- Stuck in the cereal box. Only his legs sticking out the top.
- Fridge raid. Set him up inside the fridge door holding the syrup or a cheese stick.
- Napping. Tuck him into a tissue box or under a dish towel “blanket” with a quick “Shh… I’m sleeping” note.

💫Elf Ideas Using Only Things You Already Have
No store run needed for any of these! They all use everyday stuff you probably have in the kitchen or toy bin.
- Flour snow angel. Sprinkle flour on the counter and let the elf “make” an angel.
- Sock puppet show. Two socks, a cardboard box stage, and the elf as the star.
- Paper airplane landing. Fold a paper airplane and crash land the elf on the couch.
- Laser maze. Criss-cross red yarn or crepe paper streamer across a hallway or doorway, taping the ends to the frame. Pose the elf tangled in the middle like he got caught sneaking through. Kids love climbing through it in the morning!
- Board game night. Set up Candy Land or Uno with the elf winning, of course.
- Measuring cup tower. Stack your measuring cups and have the elf climbing to the top.

What gets a giggle from a 3-year-old is not the same as what impresses a 10-year-old, so here is how I’d pick.
- Toddlers and preschoolers (2 to 5): Keep it simple, visual, and not scary. Snowball fight, melted snowman, marshmallow bath, coloring contest, and the elf games from our props bundle are perfect. Skip the pranks for now.
- Big kids (6 to 9): This is peak elf magic! Silly setups like making copies, toothpaste cookies, the Lego takeover, and a Christmas Bingo game night go over big.
- Tweens (10 and up): They want funny or mischievous. Lean into the naughty elf ideas below, pop culture setups like In My Swiftie Era, and harmless pranks like the prankster face drawing.
🐶Pet-Safe Elf Tips
If you have a cat or dog (hi, Marley!), a few quick tips so the elf survives the night:
- Keep food setups like chocolate, candy, grapes, and anything with xylitol up high and out of reach. These can be dangerous for pets.
- Avoid small loose pieces like googly eyes, pom poms, and rubber bands anywhere a pet can get to them.
- Use the top of the fridge, a high shelf, or the inside of a cabinet for anything edible.

Making Reindeer Food
These little letter board signs are available in our free Elf on the Shelf notes! Plus, this one actually doubles to make reindeer food that you can put out on Christmas Eve. We have this on our Christmas bucket list as well.

Let Me Take an Elfie (Elfagram)
Cut out the center of the Elfagram, or take a photo of your elf and glue it into the square.
Melted Snowman
Grab some googley eyes and fake snow from the Dollar Tree. Fill a glass with water, add the snow, and place the eyes on top. We used the paper carrot from the printable props set.
Snowball Fight
Dollar Tree had some pom pom garland, so we cut those apart to make the snowballs. You could also use cotton balls or mini marshmallows.
Fresh Baked Cookies
These are in the free printable elf prop set as well. Along with individual cookies that you can cut apart and glue on the cookie sheet or put in the elf’s hands.
Sprinkle Snow Angel
You can also use flour or fake snow. I will say, the little balls made a mess and next time I would use more of the larger sprinkles. Then you can repurpose to make reindeer food on another day.
Working Out
To make the larger weight I used a paper straw and jumbo marshmallows. For the smaller dumbbells, I used mini jingle bells (like the ones we use in Jingle Bell Toss) and hot glued them to smaller paper straws.
Danger! Thin Ice!
I love this creative elf on the shelf idea! Cover your sink with saran wrap and tape it on. Cut out a little hole as if the elf has falling through the ice. Add powdered sugar or flour around the edges and a few mini marshmallows.
Pumping Iron
Setting up a workout session is a quick elf idea that anyone can do. Use toothpicks or paper straws to make the barbell then add marshmallows to the ends.
Dominos Pizza
Kids will get a kick when the scout elves order a “Domino’s Pizza“.

Making Skittles
Grab a stuffed animal or two along with some crayons and Skittles to make the magic happen.

Most families have the elf show up the day after Thanksgiving or on December 1st. Some elves come back as early as Thanksgiving week to start the season. Our elf arrival letters work for any date.
The easiest idea is moving the elf to a new spot with a printable note. After that, try the 5-minute ideas in the last-minute section above.
Plan the month ahead with the free elf idea calendar at the bottom of this post, and mix big setups with easy nights. Not every night has to be a production!
In the Elf on the Shelf story, touching the elf can make it lose its magic. A common fix is to sprinkle a little cinnamon (“magic dust”) next to the elf or have the kids write an apology note to Santa. Then the elf is back to normal the next morning.
It happens to all of us! Leave a note saying the elf stayed put to watch something special, or that Santa kept him late at the North Pole. Then do a fun setup the next night.
