Cloud Dough Volcano Science Sensory Bin

This Fizzy Volcano Sensory Bin is a hands-on activity that blends science, sensory play, and creativity all in one! Kids will love building their own erupting volcanoes using colorful cloud dough and sugar cones, then making them fizz with vinegar. It’s a fun, messy, and educational way to explore basic chemistry while strengthening fine motor skills and imagination.

Supplies & Materials

  • 2 cups baking soda
  • Water about 1 tbsp at a time
  • Food coloring green and red/yellow to make orange
  • 3 + sugar cones
  • Vinegar
  • Small scoop or dropper
  • Plastic bin or tray for easy cleanup

Instructions

  • Make Cloud Dough – Mix 2 cups of baking soda with 1 tbsp of water at a time until a soft, moldable dough forms.
  • Color the Dough – Divide the cloud dough into two parts: dye one half green (for the ground) and the other half orange (for lava).
  • Create the Volcanoes – Cut the tips off the sugar cones and pack them with the orange cloud dough. Repeat for at least three cones.
  • Build the Landscape – Spread the green cloud dough across the bin as the base, then place the volcano cones upright on the surface.
  • Make it Erupt! – Use a scoop or dropper to slowly pour vinegar into the cones and watch the fizzy eruption!
  • Optional - For an extra burst of color, add food coloring directly to the sugar cones.
